What a design brief includes
- What the temporary works must do and for how long
- Loads: plant, materials, surcharge, wind and impact
- Site constraints: ground, services, access, neighbours
- Interfaces with the permanent works and other trades
- Existing information: surveys, ground investigation, drawings
- Programme and when the design is needed
- Design check category and who will check it
- How it will be installed, inspected, loaded and removed

We follow the approach in BS 5975 and keep a clear line between coordination, which we do, and design, which stays with a competent temporary works designer.
Temporary works questions
Do you design temporary works?
No. We set up the procedure, register, briefs, permits and inspections. The design and design check stay with a competent temporary works designer, which keeps responsibilities clear.
Why does the design brief matter?
Most temporary works problems start with a poor brief: wrong loads, missing constraints or no programme. A good brief gets you the right design first time and saves redesign fees.
What's a permit to load?
A formal sign-off that the temporary works have been installed and checked against the design before load is applied, for example before concrete goes into falsework or before an excavation is worked in.
